Description:
Singapore-based Rajen Makhijani works at an American firm that trains corporate leaders. Miss Dhwani Desai is doing her first year studies in business at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Nothing much in common you would say. But both found themselves on a train in India on Christmas eve. The two were part of a group of 450 young people who were members of the Jagriti Yatra - a 15-day rail journey organised by the NGO Jagriti that took them to 12 destinations covering 9,000km in a train with specially-fitted bathrooms and food provided by private caterers. The journey is unique. At each stop, the yatris or passengers (60 per cent male and 40 per cent female from urban, semi-urban and rural backgrounds) met entrepreneurs who had brought about social change in India and got to interact with them. The aim of the yatra was to awaken the spirit of entrepreneurship in the youngsters. Among the 20 odd they met during the trip one of them was an IIT engineer-turned-social entrepreneur Madhu Pandit Das, the founder of the Vishakapatnam-based Akshaya Patra Foundation. He runs the world's largest NGO mid-day meal programme for underprivileged schoolchildren. The foundation provides hot meals for 1.2 million children at a cost of about 10 Singapore cents per head.
