The Akshaya Patra Foundation came into being in the year 2000 to address two of the most immediate challenges of India - hunger and education. The Foundation began its work by providing quality mid-day meals to 1500 children in 5 schools in Bangalore with the understanding that the meal would attract children to schools, after which it would be easier to retain them and focus on their holistic development.

Thereafter, public-private partnerships with the Central and respective state governments have helped the Foundation to scale up the programme rapidly.

Across the country, in more than 8000 schools, the food is bought to the children by The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a secular, not-for-profit organization headquartered in Bangalore, Southern India.

11 years later, the Foundation has expanded its footprints to cover about 1.3 million children in 8 states across India. The Akshaya Patra programme is unique as several of its centralized kitchens (which are capable of cooking over 150000 meals), are ISO 22000 certified.

As an excellent testimony to the success of Akshaya Patra's mid-day meal programme is the numerous accolades it has gathered. Some of the much talked about awards include the "Innovation for India Award" by the Marico Innovation Foundation,  Best 'Bhagidari' [Partnership effort] under social development by the Government of Delhi and the 'Best Innovative Project for the Innovations in Services for Urban Poor' by Indian Urban Space Foundation. The Foundation is also known for its transparency with respect to its financial transactions. It has won the ICAI Gold Shield Award consecutively for three years.

Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Northern Region is all geared up to associate with Akshaya Patra Foundation in giving wings to dreams to swell it all over Kerala!
